Be aware that many low-buck paint shops will do as little as possible to
prep your car for paint.

Although the paint they use will be of good quality, the amount of labor
they save during prep is where they save the most money. I have heard
stories of $199 complete paint jobs that use Scotch Brite pads to prep the
paint. No sanding or priming, just Scotch Brite to scuff the old paint
enough to hold the new.

The finished product may look good for about 3 months but soon after the
paint will peel like a bad sunburn. I would suggest doing as much prep work
as you possibly can. Rent an orbital sander and take off enough of the old
paint to get under the oxidation layer. You don't need to remove it
completely or even get down to the primer layer, just enough to give you a
good base for adhesion. If it will be a few days before you can get it into
the shop for paint, apply a layer of primer.

Another area they will try to save money is masking non-paint areas such as
mirrors and moldings. Most shops will mask around moldings rather than
removing it. This is especially bad on color changes. Remove as much trim as
possible.

Good luck!
Ken.

ok, i bought a truly ugly car last night. after i got home i realized that
the car cover that came with it is to protect the VIEWERS of the car, not
the car itself. :-)

having it be one color, rather than the variety of colors it is now, would
be an improvement.

my question is: if i want something better than using some spray cans of
paint, is the "i will paint any car for $199" a better investment, or ?
whats the price range for track cars?
