Unfortunately our new loaner helmets are finding a new home and I'm really
saddened by this. As Charlie noted, I think most of the Steering Committee
are not in a mood to replace them.
Loaner helmets for new people is a long-standing traditon in our game. It
goes back to the beginnings in the '50s. When they were required, I ran my
first event with a loaner helmet.
While I would like to believe somebody just accidentally put his borrowed
helmet in the
trunk of his/her car by accident, I am beginning to suspect I may be in
error. Especially when all the Large-size helmets disappeared at once.
Somehow many thieves believe we did all the effort just for them and really
do not care about anybody else.
The losers will be those people who rely on loaners.
As a thought, Several years ago I once dropped a pair of leather
ski mittens at 3 Com alongside the course. By the time I re-traced my steps
to find them they were gone. So I always lock every door on all vehicles.
While I often see shoes, water bottles, and similar stuff left on
the grid, I have NEVER seen a loaner helmet left behind.
Further thought: Thoughtless actions by any one of us can cause a
loss of a site, a familar service (loaner helmets), or . . .
It is my hope we never have to have a guard at the gate inspecting
each car as it departs or checking membership cards for arrivals. But then
having each new arrival signing a release form is not a bad idea and it's a
requirement for Marina events.
