Yes, er, urban myth. All you can do with this method is get extra time to
pay for the ticket (and extra time before the points appear on your
record).

California doesn't send you a refund check - they send the check back and
you have to send it in again with the right amount. You do get extra time
to pay - but you still have to pay.

I know by experience (I accidentally wrote the wrong check amount once - I
paid the fine and the administrative fee or something. I was trying to get
into traffic school at the time).

Your best current bet is actually just to go to traffic school every time
you get the ticket. According to some interpretations of the current law,
you'll still get the points on your public (ie insurance) record, but they
don't count against you for loosing your license.

But anyway, 2 more months and then its 18 since I last got a speeding
ticket..... (we'll forget the "noisy exhaust" and "no front plate" ones,
they don't count ;-)
