While I liked the "old days" when membership was required we seem to have
set expectations for a lot of people that they needn't spend the money on a
membership to enjoy the benefits of being an SCCA/SFR member including year
end trophies. Expect a great wailing and gnashing of teeth over this
topic.
Might I humbly suggest a way around that. Offer newcomers (and those that
have been running as non-members lo these many months as well) a
complementary "region membership" for a defined period (30, 60, 90 days).
After that it would be join or go play somewhere else.
I know I have hardly been a regular this season and missed the joy of
running in the last group last weekend, but I have my opinions. I also
have my excuses for being among the missing and hope to be back on the
circuit soon as I get the back yard under some sort of control and the MR2
run-in. I had the MR2's engine rebuilt to see if I could get back up to
somewhere near the as-new level of performance against the Miatas. Because
of travel I haven't gotten up to the mileage recommended before I pushed
it, and now it has taken up smoking and burning oil so I have to take it
back to the guy who rebuilt it. Sigh!
