Thanks to Scott and James for the responses, I got the
information I needed. In case anyone is interested, the answer
they gave me and which I confirmed on the web, was that the car
has to pass the original smog for which it was designed. If so,
it's good to go in California. Thanks for the quick response!

My company just hired a new employee who is moving out from Ohio.
He has a car that is a 49-state model ( model year is late 80s or
early 90s). If anyone knows what he can expect in terms of
registration, or knows where I can find this information it would
