I didn't pay massive amounts of attention to this discussion when it went
by the first time, but was the Frankencivic the sole instance, or was it
simply used consistently as one example of a problem with significant
scope among other models?

It reminds me of protests made against a minor violation on a car with
suspected major (and expensive to check) violations as well - after the
fact it looks silly that they were DSQed for the wrong ashtray, but that's
not all that was going on.
