I've been asked about this event by a bunch of people, so maybe I can sort
of answer to a whole group.
McGee Park is a horse track/rodeo grounds/county fairground/RV park. All
of the big signs say "Sunray Park" as horse tracks are allowed to have
on-site casinos, but they are not allowed to advertise, so we have to call
it McGee Park since the horse track and casino share the name Sunray
Park. Do state laws ever really make sense? The facility hosted the
National High School Finals Rodeo for a number of years (and is scheduled
to do so again), which is why they got the lot paved. It was dirt (aka
mud) for many years.
The lot itself is large, smooth, recently paved (2-3 years ago), grippy but
tire-friendly asphalt. Course area is something like 1500X800 feet. Then
there's space for tech/impound, grids, paddock, etc. There are flush
toilets within walking distance. They've got 24-hour security, and the
Sheriff's office is a stone's throw away and within sight, so we've never
had anything like a problem with security on the site.
Site is just East of Farmington, on the road to Bloomfield. Farmington is
in the far NW corner of New Mexico. To get there from West I-40, go North
at Gallup. To get there from the Albuquerque area, go North on I-25 to
Bernalillo, and take NM 550. I know that 550 is a recently improved
divided 4-lane all the way (just drove it twice this past weekend), and I
believe that the road from Gallup is also.
The trip from the airport in ABQ (way down at the South end of town) was
under three hours towing.
The town of Farmington is large enough to have most of the standard motel
chains. It's even got an Outback (maybe the farthest one from an
Interstate anywhere?) In addition to a number of chain restaurants, there
are many excellent local establishments. There is no better Mexican food
than what we have in Northern New Mexico.
The information I sent for the Farmington page on the web site got a bit
scrambled - the room rate at the Holiday Inn is $56, not $65.
The Sports Car Club del Valle Rio Grande (Los Alamos area) and the Rio
Grande Region are co-hosting the event. SCCdVRG is a chapter of RGR.
This is a top-notch facility, and we will be doing our best to put on a
very high-quality event. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
