I have tried to be a competitor in what is now BM since 1976. (Lotus 61,
Brabham BT35 and Ralt RT5) I may not be able to tell you how to drive
fast, but I can tell you about the costs. My co-driver was within 1.1 sec.
of the national champion this last year and I was 1.8 sec out..
There is no doubt in my mind that buying a developed car is less expensive
than trying to build one! (ours is for sale) Just be sure, the car does
not appear fast just because of the driver. A mediocre car can be VERY
fast if driven by one of the few Solo II hero drivers.
The Martini Super Vee is a decent car and at the right price could be a lot
of fun. The 1835cc motor works well for Solo II since it is strong on
torque. The 1600 is too pipey (sp). If you build a motor, make it 2000cc.
Road racing the car you will either be waaaaay slow in Formula Atlantic or
you will have a lot of fun in Vintage. FF or CFF are both better choices
from a monetary perspective.
Scott Liebler was killed at Road Atlanta in a Martini when the roll hoop
failed so you should verify that the hoop is acceptable before road racing
the car.
