Halfway between horse-drawn racecars and "newbies" -- 1981. I'd been TSD
rallying for several years, but got invited to an SAE-sponsored autocross at
school, so I brought my Datsun 1200, still wearing snow tires, to try it
out. Ran the 30-second course with the mighty 1172cc engine screaming,
tires howling, and got out of the car with my knees shaking from the raw
speed...I was DFL out of 12!
I like to think I've learned a couple of things since then. For one, I
don't run on snow tires anymore....
