Keith,
Extra gauges would fall under comfort and convenience allowances since they do
not produce any performance enhancement.
Using a synthetic oil and checking the level before an event will go a lot
further protecting the engine than gauges will tho. I'd suspect the problem
with the 99 Miata wasn't due to loss of oil pressure (at least not due to
AXing), some 99 engines were built with an out of spec thrust bearing that
fails.
