Jonathan,
What do you mean by "top up every so often"? If you are used to modern
engines, any "60's or 70's vintage engine is going to seem like a real oil
burner. Plus a Lotus Twin Cam engine has LOTS of places to leak oil (keeps
the car's frame from rusting:-).
When I had a Europa Twin Cam Mobil 1 15W-50 was as good as anything else
that I would trust in the car in regard to oil burning or leaking.
The only reason I would consider for switching to non synth oil would be if
you put miles on the car so rapidly that the cost of synth is prohibitive.
