Plain and simple, lower compression will be more resistant to detonation.
Detonation is possibly the biggest enemy of any engine (turbo or
otherwise), and it can kill the motor in short order if not resolved
quickly. Since the air/fuel mixture gets hotter the more it is compressed,
high compression + already-very-hot air from the turbo is a bad idea.
There are, of course, other factors involved in resisting detonation,
including quench area and cooling system efficiency, but simply lowering
compression is often easier to solve than most other detonation-related
problems.

There are a few cars that come with relatively high compression from the
factory which can run decent amounts of turbo on the stock block,
though... the Integra Type-R is one that comes to mind, maybe other list
members will mention a few more. :D

Hope that helps!
