I think 2500 pounds is very heavy for such a small 4 cyl. car. Don't you?
Cars are really getting porky these days. The new Cobra Mustang is 3700
pounds, my Z28 is 3450, cramped 3-series BMWs bust the scales at 3500, I
could go on. I find that more often than not the car winning a multi-car
comparison in Car & Driver is the lightest one in its class. Light weight
means fun to drive. And so the Mini is very fun I'm sure, and it is light
by comparison to other cars, but it isn't the 1900-2200 pound car I'd hoped
for when I first heard it was coming.

Before I get e-mails telling me so, I know there are a number of benefits
we're getting for the weight in cars these days, including increased
structural rigidity, better braking, improved safety, more power, etc., but
I'd like more engineering put into weight reduction. Mercedes seems to be
moving in the right direction, the current S-class is a lot lighter than the
last and the forthcoming E-class appears no heavier despite added rigidity
and safety.
