> The paddock is dangerous! ;-)
Over the course of about 20 years of actively travelling the NHRA drag
racing circuit (spread across 35 years--first drag race I was two weeks
old), I have been present for two pit fatalities. One was a fractured skull
falling off the back of a moving pickup truck (in Utah). The other was a
crew member hit by sharpnel from a flexi fan than came apart while they were
warming their race car up (in California). That created a rule change which
allowed electric fan drives in all classes including stock. The number of
serious injuries over that time is numbing, I couldn't begin to recount them
all.
Meanwhile on the track, I have been present for two fatalities in drag
racing. But I would venture to guess, fewer serious injuries.
