I actually pay for about 4-5 publications but about eight more show up in my
mailbox -- some bidden, some not. Many I get because as a motorsport
journalist I find them good reference material.
I pay for:
North American Pylon -- if you consider yourself a serious autocrosser,
gotta have it.
Grassroots Motorsport -- the only slick magazine that really focuses on my
level of participation
Racer -- the best American monthly on motorsports
Motorsports News -- English weekly for a good overview of European and
International motorsports
SportsCar -- because I'm an SCCA member so paid for in that respect, but
also I write for it.
I also get:
National Speed Sport News -- I also write for it, but before I began getting
it free I'd subscribed since 1972 because it is the best American weekly on
motorsports.
Performance Racing Industry -- Another I write for. Focuses on the business
side of racing very comprehensively. Excellent!
National Dragster -- NHRA sends it, and I need it for my writing. A
must-have for anyone into drag racing, but NHRA-specific.
Drag Review -- Ditto from IHRA.
NASCAR Magazine -- because I'm on the press list.
Eagle Report -- Goodyear's mag, also because I'm on the press list.
Speedway Scene - another weekly newspaper, strictly roundy-round, but about
a week behind NSSN. Comp subscription.
Circle Track -- It just started arriving a few months ago. Dick Berggren's
new monthly slick magazine and very nice.
Plus a few other sanctioning body publications that are essentially just
newsletters.
Off the rack? Nothing.
So what's worth saving? I have about 30 file boxes filled with back issues
going back to about 1970. I keep publications that are good reference
sources. They include:
SportsCar
National Speed Sport News
Motorsport News (formerly Motoring News)
Racer
On Track (formerly Formula) -- all issues while it was published.
Autoweek & Competition Press -- only for a couple of years in the early '70s
before they totally lost their competition focus and ceased to be a useful
motorsport reference source.
(I don't keep the NHRA and IHRA back issues simply because I don't need
them, but they are both excellent archives of drag racing.)
