Well, I was on R33s for years and Charlie Clark (also a purveyor of
Hoosiers -- charlieclark@kc.rr.com) finally got me onto R45s last year.
Mine is a light car too, lighter even than the Civic -- DP Spitfire that
also road races GP.
I am very happy with the R45s. They seem to stuck just about as well, and
they do last longer. I ran seven road races last year in addition to a Solo
II program that included up to Nationals, and used 1.5 sets of tires. Bought
a set to start the year. Put on the second set one roadrace before
Nationals, so the first set lasted five races plus Solo IIs (including a
Divisional and a Mirror Khana).
One thing, too, that Charlie told me -- the R45 is the newer compound on the
newer tire. the R33s are what is in stock from an old run, and using the old
carcass design. They have the unobtanium belt material (the disappearance of
which was behind the fears cantilever tires might go away). Bruce Foss told
me Hoosier is now using kevlar for the belts, which also makes a stiffer
sidewall and a better handling tire. Those are the R45s. It is not just the
compound that is the consideration, especially if you are running
cantilevers.
Fry my experience of the past year and more, get the R45s.
Rocky Entriken (I buy from both Clark and Ver Mulm -- both good people)
