Funny you mentioned this. One of the features that sold
me on the "autocrosser's Swiss army knife" of FRS radios
(Motorola T-6310) was the weather alert feature. At our
autocross on Sunday, the thing actually went off for a
severe thunderstorm warning! I had plenty of time to pack
up *my* gear before the storm arrived and ended the event. :-)
Anyway, the weather receiver in the T-6310 isn't the most
sensitive thing, and I think that it probably misses lots
of warnings. It doesn't even seem to get NWS radio coverage
if you're not holding it in your hand. Among the features
that *do* work great are the alarm clock, FM stereo receiver,
and stopwatch. You can't take a weekend road trip without
a portable alarm clock, the FM receiver is great for listening
to the PA calls now that the SCCA has the transmitter in the
van, and a stopwatch always comes in handy when you're trying
to find the quick line around a course segment by watching
other competitors. Like I said, autocrosser's Swiss army
knife.....
