OK, gang, step up to the plate and enter the most intense autocross
experience in autocrossdom. Why keep qualifying when you can go head to
head against someone else to see who's faster in a real autocross
tournament competition?

Imagine you and your car staged side by side against your competitor.
You're concentrating hard on the "Christmas tree" to make sure you don't
launch too soon and "Red Light" out of the round. Your competitor drives
a slower class car so he gets the "green" light and takes off while you
have to calm your impulse to launch until your "green" light comes on.
You're revving the motor waiting for the two yellow lights to signal the
start sequence. The top yellow lights and a half second later the second
yellow and a half second later the GREEN comes on but you've already
dropped the clutch and are off. Good, no red light.

You're flowing through the course concentrating on driving a concise line
and making sure you hit no cones. Halfway through the course you are on
your opponent's finish straight and are looking to see where he is. Since
one half the course is longer than the other and you are on the short
half, you don't expect he'll be at your finish line, yet, but out of the
corner of your eye you are scanning to see where he might be.

You now stream into the other half. You drive too deep into a corner and
push out and smash a cone. Dang! that will knock you out unless he hits
one too. You better keep on it just in case. You drive flawlessly and
fast to your own finish line and see that you beat your opponent to the
line. Now, if you just hadn't hit that cone! But SURPRISE, you find out
your opponent DID hit a cone, also, so you won!!

If this sounds like fun to you, the LTBMotorsport.com /
AutomationDirect.com Summer Saturday Shootout, held at Turner Field in
downtown Atlanta, Georgia and administered by the Atlanta Region SCCA, is
accepting entries for
the remaining 2 events in the series July 7th and August 18th. Entry fee
is only $50, a real bargain when you consider that every driver will get
a MINIMUM of 6 runs (all but 4 drivers will get many more than that).

I've heard that some drivers are concerned that the RTP index (that we
use to establish the handicapping "Christmas Tree") isn't favorable to
their class car. However, there are so many other factors to determine
winners that raw quick time drivers don't always do so well. If you are a
consistent and predictable driver, you'll do well. The volatile driver
who cones 3 out of 4 runs but pulls it out on one run to win his class in
typical qualifying autocrosses won't beat you because EVERY RUN COUNTS.
Ken Rupp won the first event because he qualified well, never hit a cone
all day, never spun, never DNF'd and never "red-lighted." What I'm
saying is that you'll be surprised at who advances and who gets knocked
out of the competition early.
