The 3/8" drives aren't built to handle the torque/stress dynamics of
swapping 
lugnuts. He does need to upgrade to a 24 volt 1/2" drive cordless impact
gun.

Your wife got you EXACLTY what you want!  Go and buy an adapter that fits
into the chuck that accepts the 3/8" sockets that you want to use.  What
everyone uses are cordless drills, that is what she got you.  She happened
to get a very nice one at that.
