Oh, we have another question for Ask the Ace!
Eric Linnhoff in Kansas City asks:
"I want to 'turn it up a notch' and add some Cruzan orange rum to a
chocolate
cake mix. Would substituting half or all of the water with rum cause
disastrous results? How about adding some rum to the Betty Crocker frosting
in a can? I know that if I add too much rum to the frosting it would become
to watery but is there any way to rethicken it up?"
You can add rum and even wine to a Betty Crocker cake mix. Next time, try
four eggs and a half of cup of wine (or rum) with your Betty Crocker cake
mix (18.5 oz.). Don't forget to add butter and oil. Although you can try
this with both a chocolate of vanilla mix (chocolate is always the flavor of
choice with the Ace), the wine flavor is more pronounced with the vanilla
mix. You'll also find that the cake is extra moist, and probably won't need
any frosting.
As far as adding rum to the frosting, probably a little bit wouldn't make it
too runny. Don't forget that you can refrigerate the frosting to harden it a
bit more.
For added presentation performance: try making this cake using a bundt pan.
As always, mixes certainly add to the quickness and convenience, but for
ultimate satisfaction and flavor, nothing beats making a cake from scratch.
If you don't believe me, ask my friend Brigitte who told me all of this
stuff.
