<< One of my college roommates in 1970 bought an 'old' Spitfire that had been
passed along from frat brother to frat brother yearly. Bill bought it and
was kicked out of the frat a few days later. The Ozark backroads around
Rolla, Missouri were put to good use. We had a GOOD time in that car.
The only problem with the car was that we had to work on it all week long to
get it drivable for those Sunday road trips. It seemed like every week we
worked on it for 6 days to drive it one. That was easier to do when I was
18. >>
I remember those roads well. A friend of mine and fellow UMR Sports Car Club
member needed a ride back from his mechanic down near Salem, so I chased his
Healey 3000 down to Salem in my Opel Kadett. Yeah, okay, he must've been
letting me keep up! So, when we went to the mechanic's to pick it up, he
told us that one of the front lever shocks (and upper control arm) was being
held on by one bolt! Guess he got lucky!
Did you ever find the deserted paved oval track South of town? Must've been
about a 1/4 mile track. We used to do laps around it in our autocross cars...
Did UMR have a Sports Car Club in '70? Rolla's where I learned about
autocrossing in Sept. '74...
