Dodge Motorsports recently ran an online promotion promising a free hat
to anyone who could "guess" the first driver named to drive a Dodge for
Ray Evernham.
I received my hat two days ago (22 May) in a very large Priority Mail
box. Along with the hat was some marketing stuff for Dodge, of course,
including a letter congratulating me on my "win" and pointing me to my
nearest Dodge dealer in case I wanted to buy a new race car just like
Bill Eliott's.
Now, here's the sad part. The letter was dated May 12, 2000, and
mentioned, "Also joining the Dodge fold are Petty Enterprises with
drivers Kyle Petty, John Andretti, and Kyle's son, Adam. . ."
Ironically, the 12th was the day Adam Petty died.
I find it hard to believe that it took 10 days for my package to arrive
from Detroit, so either somebody consciously decided not to bother to
change the letters in all the packages, or the marketing folks weren't
savvy enough to remember Adam's mention in the letter, which probably
had an arbitrary date placed on it.
I'm sure this will upset some fans and friends of the Petty family. I
hope it was a mistake that would have been amusing in other, less
tragic, circumstances, and not a decision to go ahead and mail the
original packages in order to save money.
