I've driven the N/A Military Version of the HMMWV around the streets
and mountain sides of Bosnia, but I never drove the turbo model (don't
think it was around 3yrs ago - at least not common). The 160hp engine
did just fine on 45 degree+ inclines and over boulders and such. Not
built for speed or luxury just pure torque. You didn't dare take your
Kevlar helmet off while driving in one even for a second. Those roof
supports are mighty firm when your head bounces off one. We were
hitting rocks the size of basketballs at speeds of about 25mph. Most
of the roads over there would destroy a conventional consumer SUV, but
the HMMWV ate it up. The majority of the Hummers in Bosnia were
running on over 8k miles without oil changes, leaking shocks, bent
wheels, and no maintenance for 6 month intervals. You'd be surprised
how durable those engines are. Takes a lickin' and keeps
on...truckin'? They are great fun...
