There are several good autox sites. I like
http://autocross.com and of course, www.team.net.
There are several good books too. I like "Secrets of Solo
Racing" by Henry Watts. I got it very early in my autox career and
I'm sure it saved me from a year or two of mistakes. If you hurry,
Santa might be able to bring it to you. Try reaching Santa through
Amazon.com. :-)
The autox FAQ is at http://www.sfrscca.org/solo2/faq/ . The
Novice Handbook is pretty neat too. It's at
http://www.tirerack.com/features/solo2/handbook.htm .
As far as grippy tires are concerned, go to www.tirerack.com and
look at their performance street tires. Pick a list of several you
like and ask the autox list about them. I'm only now getting back
into the ultra-high-performance (UHP) street tire market.
Any day now, Santa (with Dan Pedroza's help) will bring me a set
of 215-45-15 Toyo T1S tires. They should be fine UHP tires for
Houston Region's new Street Touring Unlimited class for my turbo
Miata. Tire Rack doesn't sell Toyos. They do sell Bridgestone
RE71s. I have them on my other Miata and I like them a lot on the
street (no autoxes on them).
Hope this helps.
