I know some Asian folks who use the term for the type of car we all know
about. Still, I'd feel uncomfortable using it outside a very car-oriented
group, much as I would avoid the non-racist term "grease monkey" for fear of
unintentional offense to some folks.

These are folks who were already there when the Cajuns showed up from
Canada? Or were these Cajuns? Either way, some of them were probably named
"Ethier".
Never heard that one before. Then again, when I say "coon", I am always
referring to the furry quadrupeds who use my neighborhood storm sewers as
subways on their nightly jaunts to attack unwary garbage cans. Never a
person.
