The dealer (Long GMC in Framingham, MA) says the rear diff was almost bone
dry. The tranny, despite being over-filled, was ok.
They refuse to recognize a connection with the service they performed on the
diff less than three weeks ago and its failure on Sunday. They don't see any
possibility that since the guy made one mistake in overfilling the tranny,
that he couldn't have made a mistake at the rear. They refuse to acknowledge
the spots in my new driveway under where the diff is. (Just noticed them
yesterday when I parked the pint sized rental where the tuck always sits.)
I was towing well under spec for the vehicle.
The service manager tells me that it could have been a bearing that went bad
and cooked the fluid. He can't prove it, since when the fluid went
everything went to pot. This, he says, is a more likely scenario than his
mechanic making a mistake, which he had already done at the front of the
truck. Unreal.
He's referring it to his general manager, but I know what the response will
be.
