Dear Rocky (and All Others):

My first year in Las Vegas, I was the ONLY one in D/SP. For whatever reason,
everybody else had moved up to Prepared, or bought a new stock car or something.
(Go figger?) At year's end, one of the officials of the club asked me for a
photo of the car in action for my "Year End Trophy." (The trophy is a framed
photo of the car with a small plaque at the bottom with name, class, year, etc.
Real nice!) I was amazed, and protested even, "I was only here since August,
and ran all alone in DSP, y'all aren't really gonna give me a trophy are you?"
Well, the answer was yes. I got to stand up in front of my new Region's
membership, get my name called, say a few words, and act like "somebody." Me
and everybody else in the room knew that the "victory" was a bit hollow, but it
was still a great moment, and I wouldn't give it back. Yes, it would have been
more satisfying to win a hard-fought battle over a tough competitor, but this
"New Guy" was sure happy to get his "empty" trophy from his fellow racers just
the same. When I said something to that affect to a friend, he said, "You
prepared for every race, tuned engines, changed tires, etc. You came out and
raced hard, you did your turn at a work assignment, you picked up cones
afterwards, and you added somehting to the club. That's what the trophy is
for." I think he has a point, for every competitor, and not just me.

(IMHO, my .02, etc!)
