It's true -- and not all that surprising for a semi-monocoque body
structure. Any time you cut holes in it, you compromise the structural
rigidity -- which has to be recovered via extra bracing. The bigger the
holes, the more the compromise -- and although not as bad as full
covertibles, targas still require additional structural stiffeners that the
tin-tops don't. This explains why the 4-door is the lightest -- although
there are more of them, the smaller door holes compromise the rigidity of
the structure less, requiring less add-on help.
