As a relative newbie (about 2 years now) who insists on autoxing on street
tires, I believe that this view expressed by Charlie is entirely
understandable, but misses the point when advising a newbie. :)
And no, this is not intended to reignite the street tire debate, it's
intended to lower the "barrier of entry" for a newbie.
When I race on street tires, I use my stock tires and my stock wheels, and
pump up the tire pressures. Cost attributable to autox: zero. Do I wear
my tires out faster? I tend to play mostly in the practices, where I get
10-12 runs each time, and I haven't noticed any unusual wear patterns or
amount of wear on my Goodyear ZR Eagles (Mustang Fox).
If I want to race on Rs, I can't use them on the street, and I can't be
mounting/dismounting my street tires from my wheels. And we all know that,
if we're going to get special wheels for special tires, we're going to go as
wide on them as we can go (at least SP and up; doesn't apply to Stock
class). So these wheels won't be cheapies.
Total autox cost: 100% of the new wheel cost, and 100% of the (relatively
short-lived) R tires.
So comparing the raw cost of tires isn't apples and apples, it's comparing
free apples to imported oranges. :)
