Helmet Rot or "What's That Smell"

A friend asked today what would get rid of the dreaded "Helmet Rot
Odor". One guy said buy a new one. My wife suggested Fabreeze. I
wondered if the dishwasher would help, provided there wasn't any food
crud in there before you started and you shut it off before the drying
cycle. What do you guys suggest?
