I assume that aftermarket performance "chip" upgrades are illegal in stock.
Some vendors (such as Dinan Engineering) are now offering reprogramming of the
stock engine management chip in late model BMWs. This provides the same
result as a chip swap, but the physical chip in the car is the same as stock.
It seems to me that this provides an opportunity for some people to "cheat"
that would be completely undetectable.
NOTE: In-car reprogramming is available for '96 and later BMWs; mine is a '95.
