Ok, this is earlier than I thought it would be, but why not, one kind soul
has already sent Mark a donation for DTN99.
Lets back up a bit for those new to team.net. In 1996 Matt Murray half
jokingly suggested that we pass the virtual hat and get some funds together
to send Phil Ethier to Kansas for the Solo II Nationals. Well, we did and
the DTN (Driver to Nationals) fund was formed. Phil drove Roger Johnson's
Corvette that year. He made a video tape (which is still making the
rounds, I currently have one, unwatched...) of his experience.
Phil was then appointed Keeper of the DTN funds for next year. Mark
Bradakis was picked in 97, he actually drove his own car and he was
appointed the Keeper of the Funds. In 1998 I was picked, and drove Paul
Brown's GS Knife.
Each year we raised a bit under a $1000, last year we were pretty short of
that until Huck and Chuck Enterprises came through with a massive donation.
I've not done the final accounting yet but I believe that there is some
seed money left over. (I bunked with Bill Ozinga at the Raceway which has
gotta be one of the cheapest ways to stay at Topeka, and by Thursday you
get used to seeing the prisoners in their oh so cute orange coveralls do
jumping jacks at sunrise..., but seriously, because you are an the base
itself, we had frequent police patrols and it felt quite safe... but I
digress!)
Each year we pick someone to go to Kansas. The Guidelines are:
1) Must never have been to the Solo II Nationals
2) Has no plans to go. (We want to give the REGIONAL guy a chance.)
3) Has been very helpful on Team.Net, a long timer is good, but not necessary.
4) Has been very helpful at the Regional level.
We pick by collecting nominations for a few weeks, then voting for a few
weeks. This process should start around late June, whenever my Newton
beeps and reminds me to do it.

If you put your email address on the check or somewhere, I'll acknowledge
receipt of it. I'll be cashing the cheques periodically and putting the
funds into my interest bearing savings account (I'll empty it out first

Periodically I will post the totals and the givers (but not the amounts so
if you can only give a wee bit but don't want to be embarrassed you are
safe) and I'll of course honor requests for anonymous donations.
