boot lid fitment

Is there a trick to getting the boot lid to fit right?
Do I tighten the hinge to the body first or to the
boot lid first?  Seems like the hinge wants to twist
and turn.  I am afraid of breaking the hinge pin if I
tighten it up wrong.
