Hi Mike
I am also on the Hillman list and this oil dribbling problem has been
discussed there as well.
One solution after correctly installing all the bits was to fit a positive
crankcase ventilation system.
This involves putting a PCV valve in the intake manifold and connecting it
to the rocker cover.
On my early model (55) the road draft tube in the side cover is a good point
of connection.
I didn't think this would make the claimed difference but I have been
assured the negative pressure in the crankcase reduces oil leaks
dramatically especially that troublesome front timing cover.
In Australia suitable PCV valves can be salvaged from 72 -75 model Holdens.
The road draft tube always drips. Was a "feature" on early Hunters so I
assume Alpines had them too.
The Hunter had a vent tube from the air cleaner to the top of the engine
rocker cover and a draft tube on the side cover. Connecting the rocker cover
outlet to a PCV valve and plugging the draft tube would be the easy way to
do this and hardly looking non original.
is worth a try :-)
Of course there are those who say all British cars drip oil, that's how you
know there is oil in the sump. But this is a simple "fix"
