steering column lengths

I put a new steering column and steering gear box assembly in my series 3.  
Now that I have my car back together and putting the finish parts on the 
steering colum is about 1 1/2" longer than the one I replaced.  The guy who 
sold it to me said it was a Ser 3.  Could it be other than a 3?  Or have I 
done something wrong?
