Cole, there may be several reasons the engine does'nt heat up.
1. the thermostat is not closing
2. the thermostat is missing
3. it's too darn cold out  =0)
4. not enough water in the system
with a 4-7 pound cap properly fit , you should see the gauge start moving
within 4-10 minutes. thats at 2100 rpm.
If you are not having any action at  the gauge then check the temp with an out
side gauge ,,,such as a meat or candy thermometer.   watch out removing the cap
if you may have heat.
