A key point is that many of the components were not just knock-
offs, but built under license by Nissan, Hitachi, Mitsubishi,
and others to a higher quality than the rest of the world's
auto industries were willing to achieve during most of the
1960s.
Both models of the Datsun Sports had ignition (coil & dizzy) by
Hitachi and alternator by Mitsubishi. The 1600 starter and
S.U. type carbs were by Hitachi. The 2000 starter was by
Mitsubishi, the S.U. carbs were by Hitachi, and the Solex
option by Mikuni. Oh.. and Nissan left the leaks out when
they assembled the engine. BTW - the Solex equipped 2000 was
rated at 150BHP versus 135 with the S.U.s.
I used a 1600 as a very reliable daily driver during much of
college. An excellent car to own, but the lack of quirks and
related heritage made it almost too sterile. It was a no
brainer to sell when I was ready for a change. Don't think
I'll be able to reach that decision quite as easily with the
Alpine.
