Bob,

I reread my message and realize I didn't make it clear- I should have said
AWAY from the wheel and up.... this usually puts the gear lever into the
windscreen.  Second is away from the wheel and down into your knee.  Third is
close to the wheel and up and fourth is close to the wheel and down.  

Anyway, the problem with first is that is often causes the gearshift lever to
almost hit the screen, with your hand on it you often stop short as your
knuckles hit the windscreen.... this is an adjustment issue as you said.

         Actually 1st is DOWN and up for first, straight down for 2nd, UP 
(at the neutral position) and UP for third and straight down for 4th. There 
are adjustments at the transmission cover levers which I will look up and 
copy to this guy.
