Rootes started with a completely clean sheet of paper (and a bundle of
Chrysler's money) to design the "Avenger" (or "B" car as Chrysler would call
it). Other then good old Lucas electrical parts and a Stromberg carb, almost
nothing interchanges with the earlier cars. Engine is entirely different,
trans is totally different and rear end is entirely different. A totally new
design. A very successful one I might add-it won the International Rally
championship in 1971 and 1972 and again in 1981 (actually a derivitive
design). The engine came in 1250, 1300, 1500, 1600, 1800 and 2 liter sizes.
Horsepower is in excess of 200 in some versions. There were also BRM and
Lotus engined versions. So it is too bad you can't use the Cricket/Avenger
engines as you could substantially increase the performance of your Alpine by
using one of the "1800cc Brazilian" engines.
Astonishingly, like the Arrow built in Iran until a few years ago, the Avenger
was being built in Argentina by Volkswagen until a few years ago!!! Rootes
was/is an amazing company-no other company except VW has had its products
built as long as Rootes (Arrow-1967-1995 or so, Avenger 1970 until 1995!)
