The Borg Warner Model 35 transmission was also used in the Hillman Minx,
Super Minx, and variants. I am not sure if there was a change in the height
of the transmission tunnel and firewall between early and late Alpines:
perhaps someone on the list can say for certain. There definitely was a
tunnel change during the production run of Audax bodied cars (Minx, Husky,
etc.) to accommodate larger bellhousings.
On the belly of an Audax car, the automatic units' rear mounting pads are
a few inches away from the standard transmission mounting pads, but that is
easily resolved. WARNING: the Model 35 uses a different, larger pilot
bearing in the rear of the crankshaft, and it is steel. You will not be able
to remove one from a donor car without destroying it, and you may have to
make one.
The Model 35 is a fun transmission to drive, and it was also used in
Datsun B-210, and many other small cars. To find one, you might ask on the
Hillman list: I believe Kevin Rogers has a spare transmission or two, but I
don't know if they are for sale. He can be reached directly at:
