Rob,
I always take my differential housings to the machine shop and have them
soak the unit in their hot tank overnight for a nominal fee. Beforehand, I
carve and wirebrush the outside as clean as possible so it doesn't introduce
sand and dirt into their bath. Before I paint the housing with Hammerite, I
scrub it with hot water and laundry detergent. Works for me!
