Hi Rob:

When Smitty and I were taking my s4 steering cross bar out we backed off
the nuts but left them on (important). Then he hooked a chain hoist
under the crossbar as close to the end as possible. Lifted the car
enough to get weight on the bar end--a few inches. As I recall, I had
to whale on the nut a bit with a lead hammer before the thing came loose
and "dropped"--which is why we kept the nuts on; so the whole thing
wouldn't come crashing down. Repeated on the other side, lowered the
car and finished taking the nuts off and removed the now loosened
crossbar. I was putting a specially built (by others) steering crossbar
on my car, so I didn't replace the end bits. I thought I'd heard that
the ends could be replaced with Ford Festiva units--but don't quote me
on that.

My engine was out of the car at the time, but I think the proceedure
works if the engine is in--just less room to whack your nuts with a
hammer--pun not intended.

Hope this helps.
