Beautiful work!
I installed a high torque, gear reduction starter on my E-Type's big V12
and have found it to perform well. A couple of observations:
- It's really loud when running.
- We had to add shims to back the bendix away from the flywheel as it
otherwise sometimes hit the teeth with the engine running!
- The starter has an adapter plate, allowing the Japanese unit to mate to
the application. In my car's case, the Jaguar V12. That plate has a lot of
mounting holes so the starter can be rotated about its longitudinal axis.
Doing so allows the installer to orient the drive motor away from the
exhaust and it's high heat.
So with no direct evidence of fit on the Triumph L6, I just write that
the starter orientation is adjustable. With 20:20 hindsight, I would not do
this upgrade again. At almost four times the cost of a properly rebuilt
Lucas starter, the net gain evaporates, if ever there.
Rick - TR6 now gone :-/
