The vacuum retard on the TR6 was/is strictly an emission control device. I
believe the retarded spark reduced unburned hydrocarbon emissions. Since it
also causes the engine to run hotter, the thermal switch in the upper
radiator hose interrupts the vacuum above a certain temperature which causes
the idle to increase and cool the engine.
