I did my whole car (floors, doors, tranny tunnel, rear deck, rear deck
panel, trunk & gas tank) two years with FatMat. My objective was to cool and
quiet (especially the doors) the car at a reasonable price. And it worked
great! A very noticeable difference. I also bought some carpet underlayment
from Lowes which is fairly thick and quite dense. If you do your tranny
tunnel be prepared for a wrestling match with the dash support. The FatMat
and underlayment were just thick enough to make it very "interesting"
getting the dash support back in place.

Subject: [6pack] Under carpet treatment
I am replacing the carpet in my 250 and have been eyeing some hi-tech
thermal/acoustic underlayments. Has anyone tried Dynamat Extreme or other
engineered materials as an upgrade to jute and or compressed felt.
The stuff is pricey, and it occurs to me that sound proofing a roadster is
perhaps folly, since the wind noise alone will make deaf. Thermal
insulation would be nice as well, so I have looked at some claimed combo
materials.
But I only intend to lay the carpet down once, and if there are miracle
materials out there I'd like to know. I am replacing carpet since the
transmission tunnel "seal" to the floor boards never lived up to its name.
So I have some hose testing to do with the new tunnel gaskets before I
commit to the underlayment.
Thanks,
Steve
