I had the same experience on my grill frame - the metal was a bit
corroded but in pretty good shape. The plastic was gone. I cleaned up
the frame and derusted it then painted it - I then coated it with
automotive seam sealer (Canadian Tire or Eastmans) to give it the
plastic coated look. I then painted it again - it looks great and you
would never know it wasn't brand new.
