[6pack] what does this do?

in the attached picture, what does the piece of metal actually do?
when we pulled the engine, this was kind of in the way so i am
thinking of cutting it off to make the engine drop in a little easier.
 to me it doesn't look important, but i am guessing it is there for a
reason.
