I have an early '6, and I've had to cut TRF's uprated springs down 1/2"
because they really jack up the rear of the car. (cutting off 1 inch is too
much....ask me how I know). Cut perpendicular to the axis of the spring so
the cut end remains somewhat flat. It took me about 20 minutes per spring
with a supply of good hacksaw blades and cutting oil. Alternatively, you
could find a friend or machine shop with an automatic (band?) hacksaw.
When installing the spring back in the car, I rotate the spring as I'm
compressing it, so that it finds a good "set" in the trailing arm and is not
loose. You could fine tune ride height by adding or removing the rubber
things (packings?) on each end of the spring. Although the ride height is a
function of spring length, you may also want to consider Richard Good's
adjustable trailing arm mounts, or (as I've done), converting to the later
"one notch/three notch" mounts relative to alignment issues. I forget which
notches are up/down or inner/outer, but as Dick mentioned, this is documented
in Moss' literature. Best of luck.....
