I think increasing the compression ratio is the best way to increase the
power on teh TR6 motor. Especially if you have a model (73 or 74 up I think)
with the 7.75 compression ratio. I don't know why you would want to remove the
rings in the block around each piston since this is one of the few real
improvements made by British Leyland when they (and everyone else) were choking
the engine to death due to emission restrictions. I don't see any reason to
deck the block unless there is some doubt about the flatness of the surface. I
got my car to about a 9.9/1 compression ratio by milling the late model head,
which I believe had the 7.75/1 compression ratio, down .250 (1/4 inch). I know
this is a lot and there may be some negative aspects such as combustion chamber
configuration in the head of which I was not aware at the time. No matter, the
engine produces a lot more HP than it did when I had the 8.5/1 (early head) on
the engine. For my money milling the head for
the desired compression ratio is the way to go.
If there are other issues with this assumption that I'm not aware of I'm sure
we'll hear about it from the guys on this forum.
