Tranny woes

I recently installed a rebuilt tranny and J-type O/D . This past weekend I 
was engaged in some spirited driving and it started popping out of third gear. 
It only happens when I let off the gas while in third. O/D is not engaged. 
Often it is very difficult to get back into third. Otherwise it shifts smoothly 
and the O/D functions flawlessly. What's up with this?
